Chicago didn’t teach me how to be soft. The pavement there is hard, and the lessons are harder. I spent my youth believing my life was merely a tally of stolen things. Staying alive was the only goal. It just weighed me down.

Then I became a nurse. I traded the city noise for the beep of monitors and the hush of hospital rooms. That is where I learned the truth. People don’t just break in their bones. They break in their spirits. I spent years fixing the hurts that no medicine can reach. Minnesota is my home now. The cold here is fierce, but it keeps you honest. It reminds you that life is always waiting under the ice.

I put pen to paper because I know the cold chill of being unseen. These books are more than ink on a page. They act as a hand reaching out through the blackness. I stay awake to watch over your dreams when your own strength fails you. My path shows that a person can begin with an empty grip and still find a life full of what counts.
